- Is Puppies Downunder a Puppy Farm?
What is a Puppy Farm? The RSPCA defines a puppy farm or a puppy mill as a puppy factory where animals live in appalling conditions. Examples include dogs that live in overcrowded and filthy environments without proper veterinary care, and animals that are permanently confined in small cages never allowed out for a walk or to be socialised. Puppies Downunder was approved in early 2020 by the Minister of Agriculture based on the recommendation of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Victoria to operate as a commercial dog breeder. This was based on the finding that Puppies Downunder was fully compliant with the Domestic Animals Act 1994, Domestic Animals Regulation 2015 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 What is a Commercial dog breeder? On 10 April 2020 the Victorian Government commenced the commercial dog breeder (CDB) scheme for dog breeders who wish to keep between 11-50 fertile female dogs on its premises. Animal Welfare Victoria has set out the requirements to be eligible to receive a commercial dog breeder license which are specified in the links below: https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/livestock-and-animals/animal-welfare-victoria/d omestic-animal-businesses/breeding-and-rearing-businesses/commercial-dog-breeders https://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/in-force/acts/domestic-animals-act-1994/079 https://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/in-force/statutory-rules/domestic-animals-regulations-2015/007 https://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/in-force/acts/prevention-cruelty-animals-act-1986/095 Do we breed dogs for profit? We were granted the rare privilege of being selected by the State Government of Victoria as a role model among breeders to represent the future of the dogs we breed. The new code of practice for a commercial dog breeder mandates an exhaustive list of measures which must be complied with. To name only a few, it requires that staff be employed to train, socialise and enrich the animals, and ensure all animals obtain the minimum exercise requirements which is at least 60 minutes per day. We believe these additional requirements are necessary to ensure the welfare of animals are protected. However, as a commercial breeder the cost of running a business is compounded by these additional costs which contributes to the increase in the prices that must be charged for our puppies. Furthermore, unlike many small breeders we declare 100% of our revenue from puppy sales. We are registered for GST and we pay our fair share of taxes on any profits we derive. This also adds to the cost of raising a puppy. In other states there are no limits on the number of dogs kept and no restriction on how many times a female can be bred. Dog breeding is not a business activity and many derive significant revenue with no adherence to rules or legislative requirements. Why breed oodles?: Our Mission states ‘We Breed for health, temperament and for hypoallergenic qualities’. The following article is an excellent resource for understanding the health differences between purebred and mixed breeds. https://www.dogslife.com.au/dog-news/dog-health/are-cross-breeds-healthier-than-purebreds Why buy from us? Puppies Downunder have over 45 years of breeding knowledge and a wide resource of healthy bloodlines that ensures diversity. All dogs bred are testament to great health, and temperament. Our team of specialists provide our customers with lifetime support. We hope we shared some insight into the latest measures introduced to help clean up this industry and put an end to terrible practices that for so long have existed in the shadows.
- Water Safety for Puppies and Dogs
Water can be a beautiful part of a dog’s life, but it must be introduced safely, especially for puppies and smaller dogs. Puppies do not instinctively know how to swim Even breeds known for swimming need calm, gradual exposure. Never assume a puppy can float or manage on their own. Supervision is essential Pools, rivers, beaches, dams and even shallow water can pose risks. Always stay close and actively supervise your puppy near water. Start slow and shallow Let puppies explore at their own pace in calm, shallow water with a gentle entry and an easy exit. Confidence grows when they feel safe and supported. Life jackets save lives A well fitted dog life jacket adds confidence and safety, especially for puppies, smaller dogs, senior dogs or first time swimmers. Be aware of conditions Currents, tides and water levels can change quickly. Even strong swimmers can become tired or caught off guard. Rinse and check after swimming Salt, chlorine and natural waterways can irritate skin, eyes and ears. Always rinse your puppy with fresh water, dry thoroughly and check ears and paws after every swim. End on a positive note Short, calm and supervised water experiences help puppies build confidence while keeping safety front of mind.
- A Calm Start: Introducing a New Puppy to Your Existing Dog
Introducing a new puppy to a home with an existing dog is an exciting moment, but it does need a little planning. When done correctly, it sets the foundation for a lifelong friendship built on trust, boundaries and calm confidence. At Puppies Downunder, we see the smoothest transitions happen when families slow things down and let both dogs adjust at their own pace. Here are our best tips to help your puppy and your resident dog start off on the right paw. Start with neutral introductions, First impressions matter. Where possible, introduce your dogs on neutral ground rather than straight inside the home. A quiet park, a calm street, or even the front yard can help remove territorial feelings. Keep both dogs on loose leads and allow them to observe each other without forcing interaction. A brief sniff followed by a calm walk together is often better than face to face excitement. Keep the energy calm and positive Dogs feed off our emotions. If we are anxious, rushed, or overly excited, they will be too. Stay relaxed, speak softly, and avoid crowding them. Praise calm behaviour rather than excitement. Calm coexistence is the goal, not instant play. Give your existing dog reassurance Your resident dog may feel unsure or displaced at first. This is normal. Continue their normal routine as much as possible including walks, feeding times, and one on one attention.Let your existing dog see that they are still valued and secure. This builds confidence and reduces jealousy. Create safe spaces for both dogs Every dog needs a space they can retreat to and feel safe. This is especially important in the early days. Your puppy should have their own crate or pen for rest and sleep. Your older dog should also have access to a quiet area where they can relax without being disturbed. Never force interaction. Let them choose when to engage. Supervise all interactions early on Even the friendliest dogs need supervision when a new puppy arrives. Puppies are still learning social cues and can easily overwhelm an older dog without meaning to. Short, positive interactions are far better than long, chaotic ones. End play sessions while things are still going well. Teach the puppy respect early. Puppies learn quickly when boundaries are consistent. Discourage behaviours like climbing, biting ears, or interrupting rest. If your older dog corrects the puppy appropriately, allow it. This is healthy communication. Step in only if things escalate or become intense. Stick to routines Dogs thrive on predictability. Keeping feeding times, walks, and bedtime routines consistent helps both dogs feel secure. Structure creates calm and calm creates confidence. Be patient and realistic Some dogs bond instantly. Others take weeks or even months to fully relax together. Both are normal. Avoid comparing progress to other families or social media. Your dogs will build their relationship in their own time. When to seek extra support If you notice ongoing stress, guarding behaviour, or tension that does not improve, it is always okay to seek help from a qualified trainer or behaviourist. Early guidance can prevent small issues from becoming bigger ones. A calm start sets the tone. At Puppies Downunder, we believe the early foundations matter. A gentle, structured introduction helps your puppy grow into a confident companion and supports your existing dog to feel safe and respected. With patience, consistency and calm leadership, most families find that their dogs not only adjust but thrive together.
